Gov. Whitmer Urges Student Involvement in Upcoming Elections During MSU Event
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer addressed a gathering of Michigan State University (MSU) College Democrats, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris‘s campaign and emphasizing the importance of student participation in the upcoming elections. The event took place at the MSU Veterinary Medical Center, with around 250 students in attendance.
Whitmer was joined by Rebecca Bahar-Cook, a candidate for the MSU Board of Trustees, who shared her intentions to prioritize key issues such as mental health services for students and staff if elected. Bahar-Cook, an MSU alumna, highlighted her background in supporting nonprofits and her service on the Ingham County Board of Commissioners.
Liam Richichi, President of the MSU College Democrats, expressed his enthusiasm for hosting Whitmer and other notable speakers. “It’s a really big deal for me,” Richichi stated, emphasizing the educational opportunities the event provided.
During her speech, Whitmer addressed the challenges and significance of the current election cycle, describing Michigan as a pivotal state. “It is not easy to be out there talking to people, encouraging voting,” she remarked, urging students to remain engaged.
Whitmer also discussed policy priorities with the students, including economic diversification and ensuring civil rights for all, particularly the LGBTQ+ community. She highlighted her efforts to attract new residents to Michigan.
The governor touched on climate change, referencing the current Hurricane Milton as an example of increasing weather unpredictability. She underscored the urgency of addressing such issues in policy discussions.
Students posed various questions, which Whitmer answered by focusing on economic growth and comparing the economic records of the current and past administrations. She criticized recent comments by JD Vance, a vice-presidential candidate, about a federal grant for an electric vehicle plant, asserting they undermined Michigan’s economic interests.
Richichi praised the effectiveness of the event, noting Whitmer’s responses and her continued advocacy for democratic principles despite not running in the upcoming elections herself.
