UK Government Plans to Create Smoke-Free Generation with New Legislation

The UK government, led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, is pushing forward plans to establish a smoke-free generation in the country through new legislation. The initiative aims to combat smoking-related deaths and diseases by fundamentally changing the legal framework surrounding tobacco sales.

Under the proposed Tobacco and Vapes Bill, the legal age for purchasing cigarettes will incrementally increase each year, eventually leading to an effective ban on cigarette sales for individuals born in or after 2009. This shift in policy seeks to prevent young individuals from ever legally buying cigarettes.

To curb underage smoking and vaping, the government plans to introduce on-the-spot fines of £100 for shops in England and Wales that sell tobacco and vaping products to minors. Additionally, stricter enforcement measures and increased fines aim to reduce the availability of cigarettes on the black market.

The government is allocating £30 million towards enforcement efforts, including initiatives to tackle illicit tobacco trade. The new regulations are expected to take full effect by 2027, with plans to coordinate with Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland to implement the legislation nationwide.

However, opposition voices, including members of the Conservative party, raise concerns about the potential implications of the smoking ban.
