MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Luke Kennard will make his ninth start of the season for the Memphis Grizzlies against the Miami Heat on Saturday, filling in for Ja Morant, who is sidelined due to a shoulder injury.

Kennard had a challenging performance in Friday’s matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers, failing to score any points. This follow-up comes just two days after he achieved a season-high 30 points in a victory against the Utah Jazz, where he shot 7 for 9 from beyond the arc.

The Grizzlies are riding high, having secured their fourth consecutive victory against the Jazz, bolstered by Kennard’s recent exceptional shooting. Additionally, Morant contributed 28 points to the team’s winning effort that night, showcasing the Grizzlies’ formidable offensive capabilities despite Morant’s current unavailability.

In the pivotal game against the Jazz, Kennard’s remarkable performance included hitting crucial three-pointers in the final minutes, helping to ensure a tight 122-115 victory. Memphis outperformed Utah with an impressive 20 for 44 from three-point territory, in contrast to the Jazz’s 12 for 34.

“We just kept our composure and executed down the stretch,” Kennard said following the game. “It’s all about making the right plays when it counts, and I was happy to step up.” Desmond Bane also played a significant role, adding 17 points, while Collin Sexton led the Jazz with 22 points.

The Grizzlies maintained a substantial 64-50 lead at halftime, thanks notably to Kennard’s contributions in the second quarter. However, they had to fend off a spirited comeback from Utah that tied the game late in the third quarter, highlighting the competitive nature of the matchup.

As the Grizzlies look to maintain their momentum in the playoff race, Kennard’s ability to deliver under pressure will be vital in the games to come. “We need everyone to step up, especially while we wait for Ja to come back,” coach Taylor Jenkins noted. “Luke has shown he can handle that pressure.”

The Grizzlies are expected to continue their four-game homestand against the Cavaliers this Friday, while the Jazz aim to break their streak of losses against the Toronto Raptors.
