Gwendoline Christie Breaks Silence on New ‘Severance’ Role
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Gwendoline Christie, known for her iconic roles in “Game of Thrones” and “Star Wars,” has finally broken her silence on her mysterious new character in the Apple TV+ series “Severance.” Christie, who plays Lorne, a formidable Lumon employee, revealed her excitement and challenges in keeping the role under wraps until now.
“This is literally the first time I’ve spoken about the character,” Christie told Entertainment Weekly in an exclusive interview. “It’s not often that you get transported into your favorite TV show. I haven’t spoken about the character fully with anybody — with the people I work with, with my partner, with any of my friends at all. I’ve really done my best to keep all of this information to myself.”
Christie’s character, Lorne, makes her debut in the upcoming episode titled “Who Is Alive?” The actress, who spent seven years on HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” is no stranger to keeping major TV secrets. However, she expressed relief at finally being able to discuss her new role. “One of the things I do adore about the show is this extraordinary, very fulfilled sense of mystery,” she said.
While Christie couldn’t reveal much about Lorne’s job before fans see the episode, she shared her enthusiasm for joining the cast of the critically acclaimed workplace thriller. “I think this transcends television, and I don’t say that lightly,” she said. “When it aired, I sat down to watch it and I was completely blown away by its total freshness and originality and imagination. It’s an incredibly artful series.”
Christie, who was a fan of “Severance” long before being cast for its second season, described landing the role as a dream come true. “I fell to my knees,” she recalled. “I couldn’t wait to work with that fabulous cast, and I couldn’t wait to be in that strange, clinical, otherworldly environment. It was a true great gift to be invited to be a part of the series.”
In addition to her role in “Severance,” Christie has also been announced as the narrator for the highly anticipated video game “Civilization VII.” Fans of the strategy series will recognize her voice as she guides players through the tides of history. Christie joins a prestigious list of narrators, including Sean Bean, William Morgan Sheppard, and Leonard Nimoy, who have lent their voices to previous installments of the franchise.
Christie’s career has been marked by a series of groundbreaking roles, from Brienne of Tarth in “Game of Thrones” to Captain Phasma in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy. Her versatility and dedication to her craft continue to captivate audiences across multiple platforms.
