Hanif Kureishi

Renowned for his provocative storytelling, author and screenwriter Hanif Kureishi has always embraced controversy and the exploration of complex themes such as identity, sexuality, and belonging. Despite a life-altering accident, Kureishi remains committed to his craft, continuing to challenge societal norms through his writing.

In a tragic turn of events on Boxing Day 2022, Kureishi, while in Italy, experienced a dizzy spell and fainted, resulting in a broken neck. The accident left him partially tetraplegic, yet his determination to continue writing has not wavered. Kureishi remarked on his condition with characteristic candor, referring to himself as a ‘vegetable,’ although his mental faculties remain unimpaired.

“I wasn’t even pissed,” Kureishi said, reflecting on the accident, pondering if intoxication might have offered a sense of culpability. Interned at the London Spinal Cord Injury Centre, he was surrounded by others with similarly bizarre injuries, all sharing a sense of injustice and wonder at their fate.

With a long history of addressing taboo subjects, Kureishi’s work has often sparked conversation and controversy. His seminal screenplay for ‘My Beautiful Laundrette,’ explored themes of romance and racial tension, earning an Oscar nomination. His novel ‘The Buddha of Suburbia,’ delved into aspects of race and class, drawing from his own upbringing and at times creating friction within his family.

Despite his physical limitations, Kureishi has channeled his experiences into a new book titled ‘Shattered,’ chronicling life post-accident. The book boldly tackles the physical challenges and emotional upheavals he has faced, infused with the same unflinching honesty that characterizes his previous work.

In conversation with The Guardian, Kureishi explained how he quickly resumed his writing, dictating thoughts to his wife, Isabella d’Amico. Initially delivering blogs on Substack, he found a receptive audience intrigued by his journey, leading to a sense of validation and connection.

While the accident has reshaped his life, limiting his mobility and independence, Kureishi has managed to find meaning and inspiration through his writing. Though faced with substantial care costs and everyday challenges, he acknowledges the support from friends and family, which has been both humbling and enlightening.

Kureishi’s candid narrative addresses themes of dependency, regret, and the opportunity to reassess life priorities. His reflections on his past and relationships convey a deeper understanding of his own identity and growth as a person and writer.

His witty and introspective commentary continues to engage, with ‘Shattered’ offering a raw and authentic look into his transformed existence. Kureishi’s resolve to keep writing, despite his physical constraints, speaks to his indomitable spirit and ongoing passion for storytelling.

“Trauma can create opportunity,” Kureishi acknowledges, reflecting on the journey of adapting to his new reality and infusing his personal struggle into his literary pursuits. His latest endeavor serves not only as a testament to survival but also as a celebration of the human spirit’s resilience.
