Houston Cold Front Freeze Warning

HOUSTON, Texas — A significant arctic cold front is set to sweep through Southeast Texas tonight, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures and the possibility of a hard freeze on Thursday morning. Meteorologists anticipate that temperatures will plunge into the low 20s, with some areas potentially experiencing lows in the teens.

The cold front is expected to arrive between 6 PM and midnight, accompanied by light to moderate showers that will taper off into the early evening. The rain will be the last phase of warm temperatures before the dramatic shift in weather occurs.

“This front will bring freezing temperatures and could lead to a hard freeze warning for many areas,” said a meteorologist with the KHOU 11 Weather Team. “It’s crucial for residents to prepare their homes to avoid damage from freezing temperatures.”

The term “hard freeze” indicates that temperatures could dip to 24 degrees Fahrenheit or lower for at least two hours, posing a threat to outdoor plants and increasing the risk of burst pipes. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, including insulating exposed pipes and covering vulnerable vegetation.

The cold snap follows a brief period of milder weather, with highs reaching the low 60s in Houston on Presidents’ Day. Looking ahead, Thursday’s high is projected to struggle to reach the 40s, as arctic air settles over the region.

The KHOU 11 weather team has issued Weather Impact Alert Days for February 20, 2025, due to the anticipated overnight freezing conditions. Wind chill values are expected to make temperatures feel even colder, likely dropping into the teens.

“We’re reminding everyone of the 4 P’s: People, Pets, Plants, and Pipes, to ensure safety and protection during this cold snap,” the meteorologist added.

Weather alerts are likely to persist as the cold front pushes through the region, leading to potential disruptions in daily life and travel. Residents are advised to stay informed through weather updates via news apps and local broadcasts as conditions develop.
