Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk Debuts in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Harrison Ford‘s transformation into the Red Hulk in Marvel Studios‘ upcoming film *Captain America: Brave New World* has sparked excitement among fans and filmmakers alike. Director Julius Onah described the moment he first saw Ford’s Red Hulk on screen as “surreal, incredible, and exciting.”
“When Red Hulk first became a possibility in this film, I just smiled. I was smiling like a kid, and that’s when I knew it was the right idea and right moment to put it out into the world,” Onah said in a recent interview. The director emphasized that the character’s emotional core and thematic relevance to the film’s conflict make him more than just a visual spectacle.
Ford, who takes over the role of Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross from the late William Hurt, shared his own reaction to seeing his animated Red Hulk form. “It was based on what I had done, and it’s animated, so it looked familiar,” Ford joked. “I think my wife thinks I look like that all the time, so it was not that big a deal.”
The Red Hulk, a character first introduced in Marvel Comics in 2008, will face off against Anthony Mackie‘s Captain America in the film. Unlike Bruce Banner‘s Hulk, the Red Hulk retains his intelligence and military expertise, making him a formidable opponent. Onah highlighted the character’s unique abilities, including energy absorption and heat emission, which set him apart from other Hulks in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
In the comics, Thaddeus Ross transforms into the Red Hulk after being exposed to experimental super-soldier serums. The film is expected to explore this origin story, with theories suggesting the involvement of the Leader, played by Tim Blake Nelson, in Ross’s transformation. The Red Hulk’s debut marks a significant shift in the MCU, as Ross, now the President of the United States, becomes a superpowered antagonist.
Ford’s portrayal of Ross brings a new dynamic to the character, blending his military background with the raw power of the Red Hulk. The film, set for release on February 14, 2025, will also feature Danny Ramirez, Carl Lumby, and Liv Tyler, among others. Fans can expect a grounded yet thrilling story that delves into the complexities of power, authority, and identity.
As the MCU continues to expand, *Captain America: Brave New World* promises to deliver a fresh take on the Hulk mythos, with Ford’s Red Hulk at the center of the action. Whether he remains a villain or evolves into an antihero, the character’s impact on the MCU is sure to be felt for years to come.
