Beverly Hills, California — HBO announced plans for another spin-off series in the Game of Thrones franchise, focusing on the Targaryen family. Francesca Orsi, the network’s Head of Drama Series and Films, shared the news during an interview on February 13, 2025.
The Targaryen spin-off will join the already anticipated A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is slated for release in late 2025. This new series is based on George R.R. Martin‘s novella, The Hedge Knight, highlighting the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, portrayed by Peter Claffey. The series aims to explore the rich history and intricate dynamics of the Targaryen lineage.
“We have other spin-offs that we’re working on right now, one of which — which I won’t get into — is very promising, and it is still the Targaryen line,” Orsi stated. She emphasized that the network is committed to high production values and storytelling among the upcoming series.
Fans of the franchise were treated to a thrilling conclusion of House of the Dragon‘s second season in August 2024. However, the production team opted to postpone the climactic Battle of the Gullet to the upcoming season, ensuring it will deliver an epic viewing experience.
Orsi addressed the decision to delay this pivotal moment, saying, “You know what, it was worth the wait,” reaffirming that the team is dedicated to improving the spectacle of upcoming battles.
George R.R. Martin, the original author, has already viewed the completed episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, expressing enthusiasm for the project. In a recent blog post, he said, “I loved them. Dunk and Egg have always been favorites of mine, and the actors we found to portray them are just incredible.”
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be the second prequel series from the Game of Thrones universe, following the successful run of House of the Dragon. The original trilogy of novellas, which includes The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight, serves as the foundation for this new series.
With the success of House of the Dragon, HBO seems poised to capitalize even further on the Targaryen legacy, suggesting that fans can expect an abundance of content centered around this iconic family. Martin’s insights into the series have reignited interest in the novels and their connections to the evolving television saga.
The future of the franchise looks bright, with additional spin-offs remaining tight-lipped. As the world of Westeros continues to expand, fans await further announcements on new projects and developments.
