60th Head of the Charles Regatta Kicks Off in Boston This Weekend

BOSTON, Massachusetts — The 60th annual Head of the Charles Regatta begins this weekend, marking a significant milestone for one of the world’s largest rowing events. Starting Friday at 7:45 a.m., races will continue through the weekend with early morning events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
This year’s regatta will see around 12,000 rowers and 33,000 spectators along the iconic 3-mile course. It is designed to provide excellent vantage points for fans, especially under the six bridges that span the race route. Veteran attendees recommend comfortable shoes for walking along the course to enjoy the atmosphere and action.
The popular Weld Exhibition area will offer food and drinks, while the Riverbender site, previously known as Reunion Village, has new offerings and family-friendly activities for $25 a day. For premium seating, the Eliot Bridge Enclosure provides VIP experiences for $275 per adult, featuring gourmet food and a view of the final stretch.
Despite a recent toxic algae bloom in the Charles River, health officials confirmed that the regatta will go on as planned, with advisories lifted in areas surrounding the race course. Officials urge visitors to steer clear of downstream areas affected by the algae.
Among the exciting races to watch includes the women’s championship singles on Saturday, which features top athletes. Additionally, the rebranding of Reunion Village to Riverbender aims to enhance the experience for non-rowing fans, with food, drinks, and live music.
Public transportation is highly recommended due to limited parking and road closures. Spectators can take the MBTA Red and Green Lines to access the race easily.
As the weekend unfolds, the regatta promises to blend competitive spirit with festive celebration, gathering a community of rowers and fans alike to rejoice in a beloved cultural event.
