Heavy Rain Forecasted Across Several Indian States During Durga Puja
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert forecasting ongoing rainfall across several Indian states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi, from October 9 to 13, 2024. The weather disturbances are attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, which is impacting the Durga Puja celebrations in the region.
According to Skymet Weather, a low-pressure area is likely to develop around October 9 over the southeastern and eastern central Arabian Sea due to the cyclonic circulation over Lakshadweep. This meteorological phenomenon is expected to result in heavy rainfall across various states.
In Delhi, the monsoon has officially retreated; however, overcast conditions are predicted to persist until October 13, with cloud cover expected to keep minimum temperatures at around 21 degrees Celsius and maximum temperatures at 35 degrees Celsius. The capital might soon experience the onset of cooler temperatures.
The weather office in Uttar Pradesh has indicated that the region might see a change in weather patterns due to the southwest monsoon trough, which could lead to a cyclonic storm, bringing further rain. Many districts in the state have already experienced significant rainfall on Monday and Tuesday, with more expected in the coming days.
In Jharkhand, the impact of the cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal was felt on Tuesday, as many areas, including the capital Ranchi, experienced heavy downpours. The IMD has warned of continued rain during the Durga Puja with overcast skies and thunderstorms predicted until October 11.
Bihar is also experiencing persistent rainfall, with several districts such as East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Lakhisarai, Jamui, and Begusarai likely to witness further precipitation. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning along with rain.
Despite the official withdrawal of the monsoon from Rajasthan, minor showers were recorded, attributed to a weak western disturbance. The Jaipur Meteorological Centre suggests that light rains may continue in some parts in the coming days.
Elsewhere in India, light to moderate rain is expected in Karnataka, Kerala, and Lakshadweep with some areas forecasted to receive heavy rainfall. Other states such as Odisha, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Tamil Nadu may experience light to moderate rains, according to Skymet Weather.
The IMD and regional weather departments continue to provide regular updates to ensure public safety during this weather phase.
