Hoag Hospital Irvine Expansion Details

Irvine, CaliforniaHoag Hospital is set to unveil its ambitious $1 billion Sun Family Campus next September, vowing that patients will no longer need to leave the area for their medical needs. The new facility, featuring six buildings, will include a dedicated women’s hospital, a surgical pavilion, and a cancer and digestive health institute.

When completed, the campus will offer 155 inpatient beds, 11 operating rooms, and a 17-bed NICU, among other services. This development coincides with growth from other major healthcare institutions in Irvine, such as City of Hope and UC Irvine.

During a recent roundtable discussion, Dr. Steven Grossman, head of the cancer institute, emphasized plans for a 24/7 cancer urgent care center, available for patients in Orange County. “Our facility is going to be open to everybody, so it doesn’t matter who’s treating you,” Grossman stated, addressing the unique needs of cancer patients who often face emergencies at inconvenient times.

Dr. Allyson Brooks, who leads Hoag’s women’s health institute, remarked that the campus aims to centralize multiple services for families. “We want to ensure that families can receive care without having to leave their community,” she explained, highlighting the accessibility from major roads and airports.

Preventive care is a significant focus of the expansion, as Dr. Kenneth Chang aims to address pre-cancerous conditions to fight diseases like esophageal and colon cancer. Using an online tool, patients can assess their cancer risk and receive personalized health recommendations, including dietary advice.

Chang further noted that Hoag is tailoring its services to meet the specific health needs of the local community, recognizing the differing prevalence of certain cancers among ethnic groups. “We’re looking to provide the same depth of care as top hospitals in Asia,” he remarked.

With plans to recruit top medical professionals from across the country, Grossman asserts that Hoag’s innovative approach is attracting attention. “There’s something magnetic about this place,” he said, hinting at the potential for Hoag to become a leader in specialized healthcare.
