Peace Officers Memorial Day 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On May 12, 2025, President Donald J. Trump proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, coinciding with Police Week from May 11 to May 17. This week is dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who serve in law enforcement and remembering those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

In his proclamation, President Trump emphasized the critical role police officers play in ensuring public safety. He stated, “We honor our brave officers who serve on the front lines to protect our families, safeguard our communities, and shoulder a burden of responsibility that most Americans cannot fathom.”

The President noted that tragic incidents of lawlessness had affected law enforcement’s ability to carry out their duties effectively. He criticized previous policies that he believes undermined public safety and supported criminal behavior. “Their reckless, soft-on-crime policies emboldened criminals and thugs; wreaked havoc on the sanctity of our homes, businesses, and public spaces,” he said.

Trump reiterated his commitment to restoring order by enhancing support for law enforcement agencies, including equipping officers and implementing merit-based recruitment. He announced plans to propose new legislation that would impose stricter penalties for the murder of police officers, aiming to ensure such violence is not tolerated.

Meanwhile, in Alaska, Governor Mike Dunleavy also proclaimed May 15, 2025, as Peace Officers Memorial Day. He urged all Alaskans to recognize the sacrifices made by law enforcement officials, highlighting their dedication and the support of their families.

On the eve of the observance, Governor Janet Mills of Maine ordered that flags be flown at half-staff on May 15 to honor fallen law enforcement officers. Mills described police officers as “valiant” and acknowledged the daily sacrifices they make to protect their communities.

The formal observance invites Americans to take part in ceremonies to reflect on the bravery and service of those in law enforcement, remembering the ultimate sacrifice made by many.
