RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes are experiencing heightened scrutiny in the Eastern Conference Finals after losing 14 consecutive playoff games beyond the second round since their 2006 Stanley Cup victory. Recent back-to-back home losses to the Florida Panthers have only intensified this criticism, with the Hurricanes being outscored 10-2. Should they lose the next two games in Florida, they will be swept for the fourth time since their Cup win, marking a troubling trend under head coach Rod Brind’Amour.

Despite the pressure, analyst Frank Seravalli suggests that Brind’Amour’s job is secure, viewing this season as a strategic step back rather than a failure. “Even if they don’t have success this time around, this was supposed to be a relative step back year,” Seravalli stated on Daily Faceoff Live. “The organization believes in the potential for future success as they consistently reach the playoffs.”

The Hurricanes’ current difficulties come as they seek a path to the Stanley Cup Finals. They face a formidable challenge against the Panthers, who previously advanced through the Eastern final, showcasing their playoff experience. Carolina has not won a conference final game since Brind’Amour was a player on the 2006 cup-winning team.

Captain Jordan Staal reflected on the team’s playoff history, stating, “Whenever you have tough losses when you feel good about where you’re headed, they always stick out in your mind.” The Hurricanes are counting on strong performances from their goalies, with Frederik Andersen leading all goalies with a 1.36 goals-against average in the postseason.

As the pressure mounts on the Hurricanes, their long-term vision appears unyielded by immediate results. “The effort’s always been there,” Brind’Amour noted regarding his team’s play. “What you’re seeing out of him [Andrei Svechnikov] through these two rounds anyway is he’s impactful even when he’s not on the scoresheet.” With the future of the franchise in mind, the Hurricanes aim to rebound and reclaim their playoff standing.
