Illinois Dmv Scam Text Warnings

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois — Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias issued a warning this week about a new phishing scam targeting residents. Scammers are sending fraudulent text messages claiming to be from the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles, threatening to suspend vehicle registration and driving privileges unless immediate payment is made.

The fake messages, which appear to originate from the “Illinois State Department of Motor Vehicles,” warn that outstanding traffic tickets must be paid by a certain date or else severe penalties will follow. One message captured by a viewer read: “Final Notice: Enforcement Penalties Begin on May 28. Our records show that as of today, you will have an outstanding traffic ticket.”

Giannoulias’ office clarified that these phishing texts are an attempt to steal personal or financial information from Illinoisans. “If you receive one of these fake, unsolicited text messages, do not respond to it or click on any links,” he advised. “These phony texts are designed to trick you into giving up personal or financial information, which can lead to identity theft and fraud.”

The Secretary of State’s Office confirmed that genuine text messages are only sent as reminders for scheduled DMV appointments. They do not send messages regarding driver’s license status or vehicle registration. Giannoulias urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspected fraudulent communication.

Residents should block the number and delete any such text messages. Officials recommend reporting scams to the Federal Trade Commission to protect others from falling victim. Similar fraudulent messages referencing Illinois State Administrative Code 15C-16.003 have also been reported in other states, including Florida, New York, and California.

“We all need to keep on the lookout for fraud scams like these,” Giannoulias added, encouraging community members to share this information with friends and family to help spread awareness.
