Illinois State Softball Wins 5-4 on Senior Day Against Northern Iowa

Normal, IL – Illinois State softball celebrated Senior Day with a thrilling 5-4 victory over the University of Northern Iowa on Sunday afternoon at Marian Kneer Stadium. The Redbirds’ Bella Atkinson drove in the game-winning run, making the day memorable for her senior teammates.
In the seventh inning, with a 1-0 count, Atkinson hit a ball to right field, scoring a runner from third base. Atkinson went two-for-four in the game, contributing significantly to the team’s offensive efforts.
“WALKOFF WINNER ON SENIOR DAY!! Bella Atkinson with the game-winning hit to right field as the Birds win it 5-4,” tweeted Illinois State Softball after the game.
The Redbirds kept the pressure on the Panthers’ pitching staff, amassing 14 hits throughout the game. Senior captain Alex Masching played a vital role, scoring two RBIs, including a sacrifice fly that allowed the team to take the lead in the fourth inning.
The offense was energized by the performance of first baseman Caitlynn Knight, who achieved her 200th career hit during the game. “I feel such a connection to Illinois State,” Knight said. “I wouldn’t have wanted to spend it anywhere else.” Knight led the Redbirds in batting average and ranks ninth in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Freshman Morgan Bryant also displayed her skills, consistently leading off in every game this season. She made an impressive diving catch defensively and contributed a hit in the second inning. “I just try to lead by example,” said Bryant. “I know a lot of the younger girls look up to me.”
In the circle, junior pitcher Sarah Meshnick earned her 10th victory of the season, despite facing challenges in the first inning. Coach Wilkerson offered advice that helped Meshnick settle into a rhythm, allowing her to complete the game with three strikeouts and six hits allowed over 151 pitches.
Before the game, the seniors, including Bryant, Masching, Knight, and Wilkerson, were honored with plaques alongside their families, walking down to home plate. “What an impact they have made since day one,” ISU head coach said. “I’m so grateful we had the opportunity to coach them.”
Following the win over Northern Iowa, the Redbirds improve their conference record to 13-10.
