INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 10, 2025) — The Indiana Fever announced today the mutual parting of ways with forward Katie Lou Samuelson. Samuelson, who played a single season with the Fever, appeared in 37 games during 2024, averaging 4.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game.
The news comes amid a flurry of activity for the Fever this offseason, as they have significantly restructured their roster. Recent signings include decorated veterans DeWanna Bonner and Natasha Howard, along with guards Sophie Cunningham and Sydney Colson. Additionally, Kelsey Mitchell was re-signed, contributing to a robust offseason strategy aimed at revitalizing the team’s competitiveness.
Indiana’s front office issued a statement regarding Samuelson’s departure, reflecting the evolving dynamics of their roster, which now includes several new talents with combined championship experience. “We have mutually parted ways with forward Katie Lou Samuelson. We wish her all the best,” the statement said.
ESPN insider Alexa Philippou provided deeper insight, indicating that discussions regarding buyout terms had been ongoing between Samuelson and Indiana over the past week. “Sources tell ESPN that Samuelson has also been in talks with four potential teams for her next opportunity,” she reported.
The Fever’s decision to part ways with Samuelson follows the waiver of guard Grace Berger earlier this month. During the 2024 season, Samuelson had one year remaining on her contract with a cap hit of $180,250, while she recorded a three-point shooting percentage of 33%.
Samuelson’s brief stay in Indiana marks her fifth season in the WNBA, having played for a new team each year. Her overall career points per game average stands at 5.9. With a surplus of forwards on the roster now, the Fever’s renewed focus on talent acquisition likely drove this decision.
The Fever finished the 2024 season with an even 20-20 record, making it back to the postseason for the first time since 2016. The 2025 season is set to commence against the Chicago Sky at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on May 17.
