INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The biggest day in motorsport is finally here as the 109th Indianapolis 500 takes center stage at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday. Over 350,000 fans are expected to attend, eagerly awaiting the race’s dramatic storylines, including Kyle Larson‘s quest to make history.

Larson, starting 19th, aims to be the second driver to complete both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, known as The Double. After a pit road stall earlier in the race, he has clawed his way back to 23rd place as of lap 52, marking his fastest lap so far.

Josef Newgarden made impressive gains from his initial starting position, climbing to 14th from 32nd by lap 50, despite dealing with a left-rear vibration. Six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon is currently struggling in 31st place after changing brake calibers under caution.

Conditions on the 2.5-mile oval have seen their share of challenges, including a yellow flag on lap 18 for light rain, but officials expect the race will stay primarily dry. A delay earlier prevented the green flag from waving on time, necessitating an efficient restart from overwhelmed crews.

Weather looks favorable for Larson, who must quickly travel to Charlotte for the Coke 600. His team emphasized that despite the challenges, competing in both events remains their priority.

Amidst historical statistics, Newgarden expressed confidence in his chances of victory, stating, “Oh, absolutely. Absolutely.” Winning the Indy 500 from deeper than 28th has not been done since 1987.

The pre-race festivities have been filled with tradition, including a flyover by F-16 jets and a heartfelt rendition of “Back Home Again in Indiana” by Jim Cornelison, which set an emotional tone for the event.

With the stage set for an exciting race, expectations are high as fanatical race enthusiasts await what could be a memorable day in racing history.
