Ben Rice Yankees Injury Elbow Hit By Pitch

TAMPA, Fla. — New York Yankees designated hitter Ben Rice was injured during Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays after being hit on the left elbow by a pitch. The incident occurred in the fourth inning, prompting immediate medical attention.

Rice, who has become a surprising offensive contributor for the Yankees, was struck on an 88 mph slider from Rays reliever Manuel Rodriguez, following an earlier hit by a pitch in the first inning. Initially, he remained in the game to run the bases after scoring on a sacrifice fly by teammate Austin Wells, but he later left the field favoring his elbow.

After the game, Yankees officials announced that Rice suffered a left elbow contusion. He was transported to a local hospital for X-rays and a CT scan, both of which returned negative results. Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed relief at the news but acknowledged the team’s need for Rice’s performance.

“It’s a positive outcome, but we will monitor him closely. Ben has been a key part of our lineup,” Boone said. Rice’s statistics highlight his pivotal role; in 19 games this season, he is batting .292, with five home runs and nine RBIs, showcasing a .1.003 OPS.

The 26-year-old has stepped up significantly in the absence of injured slugger Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton is still recovering from an injury and has been unable to return to live pitching, leading to increased pressure on other players like Rice to deliver. Boone mentioned, “Ben is starting to carve a niche for himself as a major contributor, which is fantastic for us.”

Rice’s injury and Stanton’s prolonged absence raise concerns about the team’s depth as they navigate the rest of the season. With Rice out for at least a few days, fellow teammate Pablo Reyes pinch-hit for him in the sixth inning.

As the Yankees continue their schedule, the team’s ability to adapt to injuries will be paramount. Coaches and players alike will need to rally together to maintain their performance while waiting for key players to recover.
