Injury Woes Cast Shadow Over Pegula’s Miami Open Journey

MIAMI, Fla. — Jessica Pegula‘s future at the Miami Open is in jeopardy following a concerning injury during her doubles match on March 24, 2025. Despite overcoming Anna Kalinskaya in singles earlier in the day, Pegula’s hopes of advancing further in the tournament face uncertainty.
Pegula and her doubles partner, Ashlyn Krueger, were vying for a position in the tournament when they took an early lead against Fang-Hsien Wu and Xinyu Jiang, going up 3-1. However, the match took a turn when Pegula called for a medical timeout.
After evaluation, Pegula opted to retire from the match due to a right thigh injury, casting doubt over her fitness for the upcoming singles competition. This marks her second leg-related issue in recent months, raising questions about her readiness to compete at full strength.
“It’s frustrating to be dealing with injuries at such a crucial time in the tournament,” Pegula said after her retirement. “I just have to focus on recovery and hope I can return to singles soon.”
Following her two-hour and 19-minute victory over Kalinskaya, Pegula is set to face Ukrainian player Marta Kostyuk in the fourth round on the Butch Buchholz court later today. This match is anticipated with high stakes, as Pegula currently holds a lead in their head-to-head record. However, Kostyuk won their most recent encounter at the San Diego hard courts last year, adding to the tension.
Pegula’s match is scheduled as the fourth event on the third biggest court at the Miami Open, after a featuring match on the same day. As the world number four, Pegula’s progress in the tournament is critical not only for her career but also for the representation of U.S. players in the competition, with five American athletes making it to the last-16 this year.
