Inter Milan Aims to Rebound Against Struggling Empoli in Serie A Clash
MILAN, Italy – Inter Milan will look to bounce back from a midweek draw when they host struggling Empoli in a Serie A clash at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Sunday evening. The match, scheduled for 7:45 p.m. local time, comes as Inter seeks to close the gap on league leaders Napoli in a tight title race.
Inter, currently six points behind Napoli with two games in hand, were held to a 2-2 draw by Bologna on Wednesday. Despite taking the lead before halftime, defensive lapses cost the Nerazzurri crucial points. Coach Simone Inzaghi acknowledged the team’s defensive struggles, saying, ‘We’ve conceded more at home this season than all of last year, but we’re still in the fight on multiple fronts.’
Empoli, meanwhile, arrives in Milan in poor form, having lost five of their last seven league matches. Last week’s 3-1 defeat to Lecce left them just two points above the relegation zone. ‘It’s a difficult moment, but we must show character against one of the best teams in Europe,’ said Empoli coach Nicola.
Inter’s home form remains strong, with the team scoring in their last 32 league fixtures at San Siro. They have also dominated this fixture historically, winning 14 of the last 15 meetings. Empoli, however, will look to young striker Sebastiano Esposito for inspiration. The Inter-owned forward has six away goals this season, tied for the most in Serie A.
Inzaghi is expected to rotate his squad ahead of Wednesday’s crucial Champions League match against Sparta Prague. Key players Alessandro Bastoni, Marcus Thuram, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan will start on the bench, while Mehdi Taremi partners Lautaro Martinez in attack. Empoli, missing several players through injury, will rely on goalkeeper Elia Caprile to keep them in the game.
With Inter aiming to keep pace in the title race and Empoli desperate for points to avoid relegation, Sunday’s clash promises high stakes at both ends of the table.
