Inter Milan Hosts Struggling Monza in Crucial Serie A Showdown

MILAN, Italy — Inter Milan is set to host Monza at San Siro on Saturday, March 8, 2025, during matchday 28 of the Serie A season. As the current table leaders, they aim to extend their lead over rivals while Monza scrambles to avoid relegation.
Inter comes into this match after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Napoli, which allowed their closest competitor to stay within striking distance. Despite this, the Nerazzurri boast an impressive record at home, winning the last three league matches at San Siro and showing what many consider to be the best attack in Serie A.
“We need to focus on securing the win against Monza,” said Inter coach Simone Inzaghi. “Every match is crucial at this stage of the season, especially as we look to maintain our lead.”
Conversely, Monza sits at the bottom of the Serie A table with just 14 points from 27 matches, having struggled significantly this season. Their last victory came in mid-January, and they have failed to score in their last three matches. Coach Alessandro Nesta, who recently took over the reins again, is looking for a turnaround against the dominant Inter.
“We need a change of strategy and mentality,” Nesta noted in a press conference. “Playing against a top team like Inter is a challenge, but we believe in our potential.”
Inter’s attacking duo of Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez poses a significant threat to Monza’s defense, which ranks among the league’s worst. Thuram, after a somewhat dry spell, is aiming to break his goal drought in this match. He has only netted once in his last five outings but remains confident in his abilities.
Inzaghi’s squad will be without key players Federico Dimarco, Matteo Darmian, and goalkeeper Yann Sommer due to injuries, complicating their lineup. However, Inter’s depth still allows them to field a strong team capable of overpowering the struggling Monza side.
On the other hand, Monza will be missing Andrea Carboni and Gianluca Caprari among others due to injuries. They have had difficulty forming a solid strategy this season, making it all the more challenging for them to take points against the league leaders.
The match will be closely watched as Inter seeks to move four points clear of Napoli, while Monza desperately tries to create momentum in their battle to escape the relegation zone.
The teams have faced each other several times in the past, with Inter dominating the encounters, winning two out of their last five meetings. The only win for Monza against Inter came in their very first Serie A game at San Siro back in April 2023.
As match day approaches, the tension and stakes for both teams couldn’t be higher. Inter looks to solidify its lead and maintain momentum for their title defense, while Monza strives for survival amidst challenging circumstances.
The match kicks off at 20:45 (CET), and fans expect an electrifying atmosphere at the iconic San Siro.
