IOWA CITY, IowaUniversity of Iowa senior Payton Sandfort has earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors, as announced Tuesday during the B1G Today broadcast on the Big Ten Network. This accolade marks the third of Sandfort’s career, adding to his previous titles as Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year and a third-team All-Big Ten selection.

During the 2024-25 season, Sandfort has been a standout for the Hawkeyes, averaging 16.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, ranking second on the team in both categories. Sandfort has been particularly impressive with a total of 13 games boasting at least 20 points, and he holds the fourth-best position in the Big Ten with 74 made 3-pointers.

“This isn’t really the season that I wanted to be defined by,” Sandfort said. “But in a way, this is kinda like the person that I am and kinda what I want to be defined by. When times were the toughest and when things weren’t going well, I stayed true to my character. I kept fighting when I had every out possible.”

For the season, Sandfort has scored 505 points, becoming the first Hawkeye since Luka Garza to surpass the 500-point mark in consecutive seasons. He stands as the 12th player in Iowa history to achieve two 500-point seasons.

In addition to his scoring accolades, the Waukee, Iowa, native ranks 13th in Iowa’s career scoring list with 1,572 points and third all-time with 261 3-pointers, just two away from surpassing Jeff Horner for second. Sandfort is notably one of only two players in Iowa history to record over 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, and 250 3-pointers.

Moreover, Sandfort is poised to break the program’s all-time career free throw percentage record, currently boasting an impressive 89.5 percent accuracy on 263-of-294 free throw attempts, edging closer to Jordan Bohannon’s school record of 88.7 percent.

The Hawkeyes finished the regular season with a record of 16-15 and are headed to Indianapolis for the 2025 TIAA Big Ten Tournament. As the No. 15 seed, they will face off against No. 10 seed Ohio State on Wednesday at approximately 5 p.m. CT at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The matchup will also be streamed on Peacock.
