IPL 2025 Retention: Teams Announce Player Retentions Amid New Rules
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 retention process has concluded, marking a significant milestone ahead of the upcoming mega auction. As per the updated retention rules introduced by the IPL Governing Council, each franchise is allowed to retain up to six players from their 2024 squad. This includes a maximum of five capped players, whether Indian or overseas, and a minimum of two uncapped players.
The retention rules have seen some surprising decisions, with teams making strategic choices to balance their squads. For instance, Delhi Capitals have decided to retain Rishabh Pant, despite earlier speculations about his future with the team. Similarly, Kolkata Knight Riders have made a U-turn in their decision regarding Andre Russell, choosing to retain him after initial doubts.
Other notable retentions include Chennai Super Kings retaining MS Dhoni, and Sunrisers Hyderabad deciding to keep Pat Cummins as their captain at a salary of INR 18 crore (approximately US$ 2.14 million). Abhishek Sharma will also be retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad at INR 14 crore.
The retention process was live-streamed and watched by fans globally, adding to the excitement and anticipation for the 2025 IPL season. The mega auction, which will follow the retention process, is expected to see significant player movements and new team dynamics.
