Ironman Canada Penticton

The final edition of Ironman Canada in Penticton has commenced, although circumstances have necessitated modifications to the traditional event format.

Due to cool temperatures experienced on the morning of August 25, 2024, the swimming portion of the triathlon was cancelled, as confirmed by event organizers at approximately 7:30 a.m.

Consequently, athletes commenced their journey on bicycles near Okanagan Lake Park shortly thereafter. A significant number of spectators converged on downtown Penticton to witness the start of the race.

Members of the community are encouraged to show their support for the athletes as they engage in the more than 100-kilometre triathlon. It is important, however, for residents and visitors to exercise caution when navigating the city during this time.

Several road closures have been implemented throughout Penticton, with no plans for reopening until late in the evening. Main Street will play a crucial role, being utilized for both the cycling and running segments of the triathlon.

Traffic control measures, along with the presence of the RCMP, will be in effect at the intersections with Main Street including Eckhardt, Duncan, Industrial, Warren, Green, and Yorkton avenues.

Penticton City Hall has established a call centre operating until 3 p.m. to address any traffic-related inquiries, reachable at 250-490-2345.

It was announced earlier this year that the event will transition to Ottawa in 2025, marking a significant change for this long-standing triathlon.

Reports indicate that the water temperature in Okanagan Lake hovered around a chilly 13 degrees Celsius, contributing to the decision to cancel the swim. According to triathlon regulations, a full-distance swim is typically shortened to 1,500 meters or 750 meters based on varying temperature criteria, with complete cancellation occurring at 11.9 degrees Celsius or lower.

As the day progresses, updates on the race will continue to be shared.
