Jake Guentzel Makes Impactful Start with Tampa Bay Lightning
In a recent matchup, a 2-on-1 opportunity developed for the Tampa Bay Lightning in the final minute of the first period, where Nikita Kucherov scored off a pass from Jake Guentzel to tie the game at two.
The newly acquired winger’s ice awareness and hockey intelligence have been evident just two games into his career with Tampa Bay. According to statements made on October 16, Guentzel emphasized the importance of working hard to get the puck to elite-level players when discussing his strategy prior to the training camp with the Lightning. Despite not having scored a goal in a Lightning uniform, Guentzel appears to be adjusting well to his new role on the top scoring line alongside center Brayden Point and right wing Nikita Kucherov.
“He’s extremely smart,” remarked Point regarding Guentzel. “He’s got talent to make plays, but he’s smart. He knows where to go. He finds time and space for himself, and he works extremely hard.”
Guentzel’s hockey IQ was prominently on display during a recent game against Vancouver at Amalie Arena. He secured a primary assist on the game-winning goal, demonstrating ice awareness by drawing opposition players before delivering a well-timed drop pass to Point, leading to a score against Vancouver’s goaltender, Arturs Silovs.
Despite not registering a point on Kucherov’s opening goal, Guentzel’s strategic positioning was pivotal in blocking the goaltender’s view, thereby facilitating the play. Lightning coach Jon Cooper praised Guentzel, stating, “He has an elite IQ, so he can think with the best players out there and he’s really calm.”
The Lightning signed Guentzel to a seven-year contract on July 1, recognized for his playmaking skills and natural facilitation—qualities that distinguished him during his tenure with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He flourished playing alongside league legends Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, which has contributed to his current performance.
Reflecting on his experiences, Guentzel said, “I tried to learn from them as much as possible, and I think that really helped me out.” The winger aims to integrate smoothly with his line, continuously striving to distribute the puck effectively while creating scoring opportunities.
