DENVER — Jamal Murray scored 43 points, leading the Denver Nuggets to a 131-115 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series on Tuesday night at Ball Arena. This win gives the Nuggets a 3-2 series lead with Game 6 scheduled for Thursday in Los Angeles.

Murray’s performance was marked by exceptional shooting, going 17-for-26 from the field, including eight 3-pointers. This marked his sixth playoff game with 40 or more points, solidifying his status as a clutch player in critical moments. “He was born for this,” said Nuggets coach David Adelman. “You can kind of tell the way the ball comes off his hand on certain nights.”

Denver, which recently faced challenges due to injuries and the firing of head coach Michael Malone, showed resilience in this playoff matchup. Murray, who was recovering from a hamstring injury, played a pivotal role every step of the way. “This is really what it’s about,” he said. “Everybody trying to be on the same page with whatever we’re trying to accomplish.”

Though the Clippers had moments of offense, the Nuggets’ defense, led by Murray and Russell Westbrook, proved too much. The duo combined for 61 points, responding effectively to the Clippers’ attempts to climb back into the game. Denver maintained the lead through the first half, ending with a score of 67-59.

In the second half, the Nuggets surged, hitting a maximum lead of 17 points. Despite a late push from the Clippers, who reduced the deficit to nine, Murray ensured the win with strong plays down the stretch. After scoring 13 points, Nikola Jokic contributed a triple-double, further aiding Denver’s performance.

Despite LA’s efforts, including a solid showing from their starters, they couldn’t overcome their struggles on offense. Murray finished strong, displaying both his skills and determination, as he looked into the crowd during his celebrations. The series now heads back to Los Angeles as the Nuggets aim to clinch their spot in the next round.
