He also lauded Earps for her outstanding form in helping England win the European Championships and reach the World Cup final. Trafford believes that their achievements, alongside Manchester City‘s Ederson, are reshaping the perception of goalkeeping as a position in the sport.
Trafford reflected on his own experiences, mentioning that goalkeeping used to be considered a fallback option for those who were not skilled in outfield play or the youngest players in the team. However, he cited examples such as Manuel Neuer, Ederson, and Martinez, who have revolutionized the role with their unique playing styles and personalities. Trafford also praised Earps for her recent recognition as the Sports Personality of the Year, highlighting her impact in inspiring young players to pursue a career in goalkeeping.
At just 20 years old, Trafford has already made a name for himself after securing a move to Burnley from Manchester City in a record-breaking deal for an English goalkeeper. During his loan spell at Bolton, he achieved remarkable milestones, such as keeping four clean sheets in his first four games and setting a club record of nine consecutive home clean sheets. Trafford draws inspiration from various goalkeepers, including Andre Onana, Bolton’s Joel Dixon, and Burnley’s goalkeeping coach, Jelle ten Rouwelaar, as he seeks to develop his own unique style.
Burnley manager Vincent Kompany also joined in praising Trafford’s debut season in the Premier League, commending his consistency, talent, and effort. Kompany emphasized the importance of maintaining such high standards to secure and elevate the team’s status in the league.
Trafford underscored the mental strength required to be a goalkeeper, mentioning the significance of resilience in dealing with potential mistakes that could impact the team. He emphasized that goalkeepers, regardless of their level, face daily challenges in this regard and must develop a strong mindset to succeed. Furthermore, Trafford highlighted the supportive role goalkeepers play in aiding outfield players’ mental well-being, drawing on their own experiences and serving as leaders on and off the pitch.
This season, Trafford has impressed with his shot-stopping abilities, making the second-highest number of saves in the Premier League. Notably, he put on a stellar performance during Burnley’s matches against Brighton and Liverpool, making several crucial saves. However, Trafford’s ultimate goal is not solely to keep clean sheets but to contribute to Burnley’s victories as a team.
As a unit, Burnley’s defensive capabilities have improved, with the team achieving clean sheets against Sheffield United and Fulham. Trafford noted that these accomplishments have instilled belief within the squad and demonstrated their ability to shut out opponents. He emphasized the continuous development and progress the team aims to achieve.
