Jason Day’s 2024 Masters Outfits Under Scrutiny After Last Year’s Controversy

Augusta, Georgia – Former world No. 1 Jason Day revealed that organizers of the Masters tournament preemptively reviewed his fashion choices for the 2024 event to avoid a repeat of last year’s controversies surrounding his attire.
During a recent episode of the podcast, Day candidly explained that organizers requested to see his planned outfits ahead of the tournament due to the backlash he faced in 2023 over a vest he wore. The sleeveless white, black, and red knit top sported the phrase “Malbon Golf Championship” across the front and was removed after the first round.
“If they would have let us do what we first put the scripting through to them, it would have been a lot crazier than last year. But, you know, it will be a lot less. Toned down,” Day said humorously, reflecting on the impact of last year’s attire choices.
Day’s 2023 sweater, designed by the lifestyle golf brand Malbon, earned him the role of golf ambassador for the company in January 2024. The collaboration aimed to emphasize his personal style on the greens.
“I think I had a sense that it was gonna go crazy just because it’s just a little bit different,” Day explained. “It’s literally a knit vest, right? But it just said Malbon Golf Championship on it … It doesn’t take much to kind of stand out in golf because everyone wears the same thing, essentially.”
Despite the attention his previous outfit garnered, Day asserted he did not intend any disrespect toward the tournament or Augusta National Golf Club. “The whole experience of Augusta is phenomenal,” he commented. “I just want to make sure that I’m not trying to do anything that’s too crazy or outlandish to disrespect the tournament.”
This scenario is not unprecedented in professional sports. In 2018, Serena Williams faced backlash for her catsuit at the French Open, which led tournament officials to implement stricter dress codes. Additionally, in 2021, Norway’s beach handball team faced scrutiny for their bikini bottoms, resulting in a broader discussion about gender and attire in sports.
Further highlighting the topic, Magnus Carlsen, the five-time world chess champion, walked away from the 2024 World Rapid Chess Championship due to conflict over his denim attire, which violated the dress code set by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). However, Carlsen returned for the World Blitz Championship after discussions with FIDE.
As the spotlight on attire persists, Day remains humble regarding his fashion choices. “I do not see myself as a fashion icon,” he stated. Fans will await his future appearances to see how his style evolves.
