Jason Donovan Rocky Horror Show

Jason Donovan, the renowned Australian actor and singer, has expressed his enthusiasm for his upcoming role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the Cardiff production of “The Rocky Horror Show.” Donovan is set to take on the iconic role in Richard O’Brien’s musical, which will be staged at Cardiff’s New Theatre from November 4 to 9, 2024.

Speaking about his affection for the renowned musical, Donovan stated, “In a nutshell, I’m a fan. I love the show; I love the music; I love the character.” The Rocky Horror Show is celebrated as a humorous tribute to classic B movies, particularly science fiction and horror films from the 1930s to the early 1960s.

The musical narrates the story of a newly engaged couple who find themselves caught in a storm and end up at the residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a mad transvestite scientist. It features the unveiling of his new creation, Rocky, a parody of the traditional Frankenstein monster, depicted as a muscular man with blond hair and a tan. The show has enjoyed global popularity, being performed in 20 different languages and entertaining 30 million people worldwide.

Jason Donovan is no stranger to the character of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, having first played the role over 25 years ago. He remarked, “I don’t feel uncomfortable, playing Frank at 56 – and, of course, I have personal reasons for being grateful to the show,” noting he met his wife, Angela Malloch, during a touring production in the late 1990s. The couple has three children together.

Donovan particularly appreciates the concise nature of the production, saying, “One of the reasons I love Rocky is because it’s a short show. It says everything it needs to say and nothing more. There’s no unnecessary padding. It means nobody gets bored and you leave them wanting more.”

The physical demands of the role are also a consideration for Donovan. He commented, “I spend a lot more time in physio these days, something I’ve put in as an appendix in my contract. I’m in my mid-50s. I’m aware of having to look after myself.”

While Jason Donovan will portray Dr. Frank-N-Furter from November 6 to 9, the role will be played by Stephen Webb on November 4 and 5.
