Jason Onye’s Inspiring Return to Notre Dame Football

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Jason Onye, a fifth-year senior defensive tackle for Notre Dame football, is back on the field this spring after stepping away last October for mental health reasons. The 6-foot-5, 308-pounder is competing for a starting position, demonstrating resilience and determination that have inspired his teammates and coaches.
Irish defensive line coach Al Washington lauded Onye’s progress, stating, “His journey is one that has changed me as a person.” Washington emphasized the importance of connecting with players on a deeper level, noting that helping Onye regain his footing has been a growth experience for everyone involved. “I can’t even express how proud I am of that kid,” Washington added. “How Jason has evolved is a reflection of Notre Dame. It’s a holistic approach, and they really care.”
During his time away from the program, Onye remained committed to his academic requirements. His teammates and coaches, including head coach Marcus Freeman, maintained contact with him, supporting his well-being and growth. Onye, who has played in 18 games over the past two seasons, recorded 1.5 sacks in a match against Purdue last September and participated in 31 snaps during his last game against Louisville.
Washington commented on the pressures faced during the current season, remarking, “You’re in arguably the most pressure-packed season of my career. At the same time, it’s about the people, man.” He added, “What wakes us up? It is seeing young men reach their potential, overcome whatever’s in their way. That’s why we do what we do.”
Regarding his approach during Onye’s absence, Washington said, “Just engage. Help him. Be supportive. Be understanding. Be empathetic. All of that.” He also credited Onye’s family for their role in his return. “He’s got a great family, and it’s a credit to Notre Dame and a credit to the young man,” Washington stated.
The progress Onye has made is evident not only in his athletic performance but also in his mental and emotional state. “To see that and to be there and witness his resilience and his love of team, all of that was awesome,” Washington continued. “When a similar situation comes up down the road, I’ll look back on that. I love Jason. Me and him will be close for the rest of our lives.”
Onye has gained weight, returning to 308 pounds after being listed at 291 and 294 in previous seasons. Washington referred to this as “good weight,” indicating it has enhanced Onye’s strength without diminishing his agility. “Jason is different,” Washington said, praising Onye’s growth in fundamental skills and game knowledge. “I have a high expectation for him. He left on a high note, and he’s picking back up on a high note.”
In other news, former quarterback Riley Leonard made a notable appearance at Notre Dame’s Pro Day this Thursday, showcasing his progress following three foot and ankle surgeries in the offseason. Leonard, who transferred from Duke, expressed what a meaningful moment it was for him to return to campus, stating, “To be here smiling, having fun with the guys, is kind of a full-circle moment for me.”
With numerous NFL scouts in attendance, Leonard aimed to demonstrate his arm strength by throwing roughly five dozen passes to former Irish teammates. Highlights included hitting receivers Kris Mitchell and Jayden Harrison on multiple deep routes. “I wanted to let it fly,” Leonard said. “If I was going to miss, I was going to miss long.”
Though some throws required adjustment from his targets, Leonard felt confident overall, saying, “It’s good working with fast receivers.” Despite a few incomplete passes, he noted that working in rhythm with his teammates felt rewarding. However, when asked about what he proved at the Pro Day, Leonard replied, “I don’t know. Shoot, we just came out here and did routes on air.”
Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 216 pounds, Leonard threw during the NFL Scouting Combine on March 1 but opted out of the 40-yard dash to maintain an element of mystery about his speed. “Hey, everybody thinks I’m really fast, so we’re going to keep it that way,” he said with a laugh.
