Jemimah Rodrigues, one of India’s most sought-after women cricketers on the franchise circuit, recently shared insights into her evolving role within the Indian cricket team, her inspiration from male cricket icons, and her aspirations for the women’s game. In an exclusive interview with ESPNcricinfo during a brand shoot in Delhi, Rodrigues spoke candidly about her cricketing journey and future pursuits.

Rodrigues detailed her transition to a new batting position at number five, emphasizing the adaptability required to meet team demands. “I think for me the important thing is what the team needs from me and how I can contribute, whether batting at No. 3, opening, or lower down the order,” she stated. She acknowledged the challenges of batting down the order, such as adapting quickly to game situations and honing her power-hitting skills.

She elaborated on the Indian team’s increased focus on fitness and fielding, highlighting the influence of coach Amol Muzumdar. Rodrigues mentioned ongoing development efforts, stating, “We had a camp just on fitness and fielding. It’s a long process, but we keep at it, and I can assure you that we are getting better.” The team’s fielding coach, Munish Bali, also provides specialized training for each player.

Rodrigues finds considerable inspiration in Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli, citing similarities in their batting styles. She noted, “Whenever he hits sixes, he hits it in the gaps so that he can get at least a boundary even if it’s a mishit. It’s very smart cricket that he plays.” Rodrigues aspires to incorporate these tactics into her own game and draws parallels to Kohli’s ability to build an innings.

Beyond domestic cricket, Rodrigues dreams of lifting the World Cup for India. She expressed a strong desire to leave a legacy similar to that of the men’s team. “It will be the first time for the women’s team,” she remarked. The Under-19 teams have accomplished it, but the senior women’s team has yet to attain this milestone.

Rodrigues also discussed her experiences with international franchise cricket, playing for the Delhi Capitals and Trinbago Knight Riders. “It’s the best way to gain experience which I can use when I play for India,” she explained. Her stints in foreign leagues, such as the Kia Super League, have helped her grow personally and professionally. Rodrigues reflected on how managing life’s mundane tasks abroad while competing has fostered her independence.

Most recently, Rodrigues delivered a significant performance in the Caribbean Premier League, dubbed “knockout.” She described the pressures and satisfaction of performing in crucial matches, such as the last league match that was “not officially a semi-final, but actually a semi-final” for her team. Her adaptability to different playing conditions is something she hopes to leverage in upcoming international tournaments, including the World Cup in the UAE.
