RENO, Nev. — Jeremy Renner, the acclaimed actor known for his roles in ‘Marvel‘ films and ‘Mayor of Kingstown,’ is set to release a memoir detailing his harrowing recovery from a near-fatal snowplow accident in 2023. The book, titled ‘My Next Breath,’ will be published by Flatiron Books and is scheduled for release on April 29.

On Jan. 1, 2023, Renner was run over by a 14,300-pound snowplow near his home in Reno, Nevada. The accident left him with multiple severe injuries, including broken bones and significant trauma. Renner, 54, has since undergone a grueling recovery process, which he describes as a lifelong journey.

‘I had to accept it for the rest of my life. There’ll be nothing normal or as it was prior to the accident,’ Renner told PEOPLE in May 2024. ‘By the way, I’m okay with that. It’s making my life better. I’m healthier because of it.’

In his memoir, Renner provides a firsthand account of the accident and the lessons he has learned through his recovery. The book is described by its publisher as ‘gripping’ and ‘inspiring,’ offering readers a testament to the human spirit’s capacity to endure and find purpose in the face of adversity.

‘Jeremy writes in blistering detail about his accident and the aftermath,’ the synopsis reads. ‘This retelling is not merely a gruesome account of what happened to him; it’s a call to action and a forged companionship between reader and author as Jeremy recounts his recovery journey and reflects on the impact of his suffering.’

Renner has been open about the physical and emotional toll of the accident. During an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show‘ in May 2023, he revealed that ‘half my face is metal. All the right side of my back is metal.’ Despite these challenges, Renner has maintained a positive outlook, emphasizing the importance of health and well-being in his recovery.

‘Recovery will be until I’m out of this old hot mess of a body,’ he said. ‘It was a way for me to really accept that it is going to be forever.’

In June 2023, Renner shared more details about the accident in an interview with a major outlet, describing the moment he was pulled underneath the snowplow. ‘It undulates, because there’s four sections of tires with these metal tracks — it pulls it like a tank. I remember every undulation,’ he said. ‘I remember my head cracking on the thing and it just pressing on me — it’s exactly like you think it would feel. An immovable object and a crushing force, and something’s gotta give.’

Renner has also utilized hyperbaric oxygen therapy as part of his recovery. In a social media post on Jan. 19, 2025, he shared a photo of himself in a hyperbaric chamber, captioning it, ‘Hyperbaric at 2 atmos has been a staple in my life for 20 months now. 02 is essential for our life and our longevity … Pull up a chair and let’s discuss all things good in life today !!! #MyNextBreath.’

Renner hopes his story will inspire others facing their own challenges. ‘Two years after my accident I now find myself now surrounded by love, more connected to the people around me and filled with gratitude,’ he told PEOPLE. ‘I’m hopeful that by sharing my story, it might help anyone out there who is facing their own moment where it feels like the odds are against them.’

‘My Next Breath’ is available for preorder now and will be released on April 29, 2025.
