Jessica Simpson Performing Sxsw Luck Reunion Festival

SPICEWOOD, Texas – Jessica Simpson opened up about her emotional journey following her separation from Eric Johnson during a surprise performance at the Luck Reunion festival on March 14. The 44-year-old singer revealed that her forthcoming EP, “Nashville Canyon, Part 1,” is a reflection of her life being turned “upside down” after 10 years of marriage.

While performing at the festival, Simpson disclosed, “I was out in Nashville and I had my heart wide open. I was in a very intuitive state and had to ask some very personal questions on the home front.” She continued, “I found out that my world had been turned upside down and that life was very different. I am now a very single lady.” Simpson’s candid revelation resonates with many fans as she navigates personal challenges.

The pop star shared how she channeled her emotional turmoil into her music. “When we open our hearts, sometimes we’re vulnerable, and it just gets broken,” Simpson reflected. “Maybe we forget that we’ve been broken for a really long time, but when we meet ourselves, when we write, when we sing, and when we connect with ourselves, we find all the answers.”

Simpson’s performance was her first in 15 years, and she introduced new tracks, including the break-up anthem “Leave,” which captures the rawness of her heartbreak. The song features poignant lyrics like, “What we had was magic / Now you’ve made it tragic / Giving her what you gave to me / Now the well that you drank from’s empty.”

On January 24, Simpson and Johnson confirmed their separation after nearly a decade of marriage. They share three children: Maxwell, 12; Ace, 11; and Birdie, 5. At the time of their split, Simpson expressed, “Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage. Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them.”

Despite the challenges, Simpson expressed gratitude for the support she has received, including from Johnson. “Eric supported that gift. My kids supported that gift,” she stated about creating the EP. The singer emphasized that her recent experiences contributed significantly to her creative process.

In her lyrics, Simpson hints at infidelity and the pain it has caused, singing, “Did you do to her what you did to me? Was she on her knees?” In interviews, she stated that writing the song “Leave” was “a hard lyric for me to write,” but it allowed her to confront emotions she had kept buried.

Simpson acknowledged the power of vulnerability in music, saying, “After writing all the lyrics and the melodies, I realized, ‘Why would I want to show off?’ There’s so much power in being able to be subtle. Music is about communicating, not yelling at people.”

“Nashville Canyon, Part 1,” set for release on March 21, will mark Simpson’s first major musical project in over a decade. Her return to music comes amid personal challenges, providing an outlet for her emotional experiences.
