Jets Conduct Extensive Interviews for Head Coach and GM Positions
The New York Jets have launched an extensive search for their next head coach and general manager, conducting interviews with a wide range of candidates since December 2024. Jets Chairman Woody Johnson is leading the effort, with support from The 33rd Team, a consulting firm assisting in identifying and vetting potential hires.
The team has already interviewed several high-profile candidates for the head coach position, including former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel, former Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy, and former Washington Commanders coach Ron Rivera. For the general manager role, the Jets have spoken with experienced executives such as Thomas Dimitroff, Jon Robinson, and Louis Riddick.
Fans and analysts are divided on what the Jets need most. Some advocate for an offensive-minded coach to revitalize a struggling offense, while others prefer a disciplined leader to address the team’s recurring issues with penalties and focus. The Jets have tried various approaches in recent years, from hiring defensive-minded Robert Saleh in 2021 to bringing in offensive specialist Adam Gase in 2019, but none have yielded sustained success.
Mike Vrabel, who has deep ties to the New England Patriots, is considered a strong candidate for the head coach position. Meanwhile, Matt Nagy, who returned to the Kansas City Chiefs as offensive coordinator in 2023, brings a wealth of experience. The Jets are also exploring less conventional options, such as former NFL quarterback Josh McCown, who has been coaching Sam Darnold with the Minnesota Vikings.
The search comes at a critical time for the Jets, who have not made the playoffs since 2010. With a roster that includes young talent like quarterback Zach Wilson and wide receiver Garrett Wilson, the team is looking for leadership to turn its fortunes around. The hiring process is expected to continue through January, with a decision anticipated before the NFL Combine in late February.
