Winnipeg Jets St. Louis Blues Playoff Game

WINNIPEG, Manitoba – The Winnipeg Jets rallied in the second period of Game 5 of the Western Conference First Round on Wednesday, defeating the St. Louis Blues 5-3 at Canada Life Centre. After losing their star center Mark Scheifele early in the game, the Jets responded solidly, demonstrating depth and resolve.

With Scheifele sidelined after a check from Blues captain Brayden Schenn, the Jets needed a boost. “Sometimes when you lose your No. 1 center, you can feel a bit of a sag,” Jets captain Kyle Connor said. “But I thought the guys really rallied around it.” Coach Scott Arniel remained uncertain about Scheifele’s status for Game 6 on Friday.

In the absence of their top player, Winnipeg outperformed St. Louis in the second period, outshooting them 14-3. The Jets scored two goals in that period, their first such goals in a second period this series. “It was outstanding,” Arniel noted, referring to the team’s overall performance. “Just real proud of the way the guys stuck together and played our game.”

Vladislav Namestnikov, who stepped up to take Scheifele’s spot, scored what ended up being the game-winning goal. “We need it from everybody, and I thought he rose to the occasion,” Connor praised Namestnikov.

The Jets took a 1-0 lead in the first period with a goal from Connor, and followed up with goals from Dylan DeMelo and Namestnikov in the second period to warp around St. Louis’ early score. Despite the overtime rule in the playoffs, the Jets took control of the series with this crucial victory, leading the best-of-seven series 3-2.

Blues coach Jim Montgomery acknowledged his team’s difficulties following their two decisive wins at home, stating, “We’ve got to be more connected… We didn’t establish a forecheck.” However, he remains optimistic about their ability to regroup in their home arena.

With Game 6 approaching, the Jets are looking to finish off the series in St. Louis on Friday at 8 p.m. ET.
