Jhonattan Vegas Takes Early Lead at PGA Championship in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — Jhonattan Vegas emerged as the first-round leader at the PGA Championship with a stunning 7-under 64 on Thursday at Quail Hollow Club. His performance included nine birdies and only two bogeys, securing a two-shot lead over his closest competitors.
As the sun set, Vegas had just birdied the challenging 18th hole, part of what is known as the “Green Mile.” He expressed his excitement about the day, stating, “It feels amazing. It’s kind of what we dream of. What we train every day for. It’s great to get going this way,” during an interview with ESPN.
In second place, Ryan Gerard and Cameron Davis both finished their rounds at 5-under 66. Notably, Vegas, who is 40 years old, has struggled in previous major tournaments, with his best finish being a tie for 22nd at the 2016 PGA Championship.
“I’ve been working on prioritizing playing well in majors,” Vegas remarked, reflecting on his experience. “We’re getting older, getting wiser, not putting as much pressure on myself. It worked out today.”
Defending champion Xander Schauffele, alongside Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, is part of the marquee afternoon group set to tee off at 1:47 p.m. ET on Friday. McIlroy, who finished with a disappointing 3-over 74 in the first round, will need to make significant improvements to contend.
Among notable golfers, Matt Fitzpatrick, the 2022 U.S. Open champion, logged a strong 3-under 68 and is looking to close the gap on Vegas.
This marks a significant moment for Venezuelan golf; Vegas is the first player from Venezuela to co-lead after any round of a major tournament. With a promising start, Vegas aims to maintain his position as the tournament progresses.
