Jim Irsay Colts Owner Obituary

INDIANAPOLIS — Jim Irsay, the longtime owner of the Indianapolis Colts, died Wednesday at the age of 65. His passing was confirmed by the team, which stated that he died peacefully in his sleep.

Irsay’s life in football began early. He joined the Colts as a ball boy after his father, Bob Irsay, purchased the franchise in 1972. Over the years, he worked his way through various roles, ultimately becoming the owner after his father’s death in 1997.

Under Irsay’s leadership, the Colts became a formidable force in the NFL. The team made 11 playoff appearances across 12 seasons starting in 1999 and won the Super Bowl in 2007. He was known for his bold decisions, including drafting star quarterback Peyton Manning, who helped transform the franchise.

Jim Irsay’s tenure was not without controversy. He publicly battled addiction and had several health challenges, including respiratory issues in recent years. In 2014, he faced legal troubles following a DUI arrest, which resulted in a suspension from the league.

Despite these challenges, Irsay became an advocate for mental health, launching the Kicking the Stigma initiative, which raised over $17 million for mental health awareness and support programs.

Following his death, attention has turned to the future of the franchise. Irsay’s eldest daughter, Carlie Irsay-Gordon, is expected to succeed him in leadership, supported by her sisters, Casey Foyt and Kalen Jackson. The three women have been groomed for this role throughout their lives and have extensive experience within the organization.

The Colts expressed their condolences, emphasizing Irsay’s commitment to the team and community. “Jim’s dedication and passion for the Indianapolis Colts in addition to his generosity, commitment to the community, and most importantly, his love for his family were unsurpassed,” the team said in a statement.

In the words of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, “Jim was a friend, and a man deeply committed to his family, the game, the Colts, and the Indianapolis community.”

Irsay’s impact on the team and the NFL will be long remembered as the organization prepares to enter a new era of leadership led by his daughters.
