Joel Dahmen Sets Course Record at Punta Cana Championship

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic (AP) — Joel Dahmen began the Corales Puntacana Championship eight strokes behind the lead but quickly turned the tide, setting a course record with a 10-under 62 on Thursday. This performance put him two shots ahead as he looks to secure his second PGA Tour title at the site of his 2021 victory.
Dahmen’s stellar round included three birdies in his final four holes on the Corales Golf Course at Punta Cana Resort. His remarkable play established him as a contender, leading the field while many players struggled to break into the 60s.
“I’ve been making everything this week,” Dahmen said, reflecting on his impressive putting performance. “You have to make everything with the scores I’ve shot. Like it starts to look like an ocean; you think you can make all of them.”
After finishing with a second-round 66 on Friday, Dahmen achieved a two-day total of 128, which set the tournament record for 36 holes. He holds a commanding four-shot advantage at the halfway point of the event.
With 16 birdies across the two rounds and no bogeys, Dahmen’s consistency has been a key factor in his current position. “It’s just fun. I’ve never been in this position before,” he said. “Two great days and need two more of them.”
Michael Thorbjornsen shot a commendable 63 on Friday, elevating him into a tie for second place alongside Garrick Higgo and Charley Hoffman, all sitting at 12-under par. Hoffman’s enthusiasm was palpable as he mentioned his trio of closing birdies, saying, “Birdieing those last three is definitely a nice little kickstart to the weekend.”
Chasing Dahmen closely, Chan Kim, Keith Mitchell, and Dylan Wu are tied for fifth at 11-under, showcasing the competitive nature of the tournament. With the winner set to earn $720,000 from the $4 million purse, the stakes are high. The victory also includes a two-year PGA Tour exemption, although the winner does not gain automatic entry into the Masters.
Dahmen, who narrowly retained his PGA Tour card last year, sees an opportunity for a much-needed boost with another win. “This course means a lot to me, and winning here again would be incredible,” he stated.
As the tournament progresses into the weekend, expect Dahmen to lean on his skill and focus, aiming for his second title in the Dominican Republic.
