Jonathan Allen Reflects on Departure, Embraces New Journey with Vikings

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, recently released from the Washington Commanders, is embracing a fresh start with the Minnesota Vikings. Reflecting on his departure, Allen expressed gratitude for the opportunity ahead, acknowledging the business nature of the NFL during his first public comments on the matter.
Allen, a first-round draft pick in 2017, dedicated eight seasons to the Commanders. His tenure included significant highs, such as the team’s 12-5 record last season, their best since 1991, and a run to the NFC Championship. Despite these achievements, the franchise’s new leadership opted not to include him in their future plans.
“The NFL is a business,” Allen stated. “It’s very hard to play your entire career with one team. A new regime came in, they had a path they wanted to follow, and I wasn’t a part of that. I gotta give them credit for doing me a favor by releasing me when they did.”
Looking forward, Allen is eager to join the Vikings and reunite with head coach Kevin O’Connell. “Things just didn’t work out for whatever reason, but I’m super excited—super, super excited—to be part of this new team,” he said.
As he embarks on this new chapter with Minnesota, Allen aims to make a significant impact, hoping to capitalize on the lessons learned during his time with the Commanders. Fans can expect an energized and motivated player, eager to contribute to his new team’s success.
