Jonquel Jones New York Liberty Basketball Injury

New York, NY – Jonquel Jones, a star player for the New York Liberty, left Thursday’s game against the Washington Mystics due to an apparent ankle injury. The injury occurred in the first period as she attempted a shot in the paint. After missing the shot, Jones collapsed upon landing and required medical attention on the floor.

The training staff worked on her ankle, adjusting her sneaker before escorting her to the locker room. Although she needed assistance walking, Jones displayed some strength on her injured foot. The Liberty have announced that her return is questionable due to the ankle injury.

Jones is currently in her third season with the Liberty and came into the game averaging a double-double with 15.7 points and 11.3 rebounds. The potential loss of last year’s WNBA Finals MVP adds to the team’s struggles, especially with Nyara Sabally also sidelined. Sabally missed her sixth consecutive game and is set to join the German national team for the upcoming EuroBasket Women’s competition alongside Liberty teammate Leonie Fiebich.

At the end of the first period, the Liberty were trailing the Mystics 22-17. Despite the setback, there was a bright moment for New York as Sabrina Ionescu tied and broke Crystal Robinson‘s long-standing record for the most three-pointers in franchise history, hitting her 400th and 401st shots. Ionescu reached the milestone in just 151 games, making her the fastest player to do so in WNBA history, breaking Diana Taurasi‘s previous record by seven games.
