NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Josef Newgarden, the two-time defending Indy 500 champion, aims to make history on May 25 by becoming the first driver to win the prestigious race three times in a row. When he is not focused on racing, Newgarden enjoys family life in Nashville with his wife, Ashley, and their 3-year-old son, Koda.

13 Sports’ Dave Calabro recently visited the Newgarden home to explore their family dynamics. During the visit, Calabro asked Koda if he understands his father’s profession. Newgarden responded, “It’s amazing how much he knows about the Indy 500.” Koda chimed in, recalling the tradition of pouring milk on the winner’s head, saying, “Because he was a naughty boy.”

The Newgardens’ home serves as a private retreat for Josef, featuring a large workout room and an array of toys for Koda. The garage proudly displays a Corvette, a Porsche, and a Camaro, a nod to Newgarden’s racing lifestyle. “No. I drive like a grandma on the road because I race,” Josef joked when asked about his driving habits.

On the walls of the house hang victory wreaths that lead into his office, which he affectionately calls his “man cave.” Among his prized possessions are two miniature Borg-Warner trophies, awarded to Indy 500 winners. Reflecting on his desire for a third consecutive victory, Newgarden stated, “I just want to win the race. If that happens to be three in a row, then that’s what it will be.”

Newgarden’s recent triumphs have brought him recognition, including visits to the White House, but his connection to Indiana remains strong. “I grew up karting there, so Indiana is like my second home. We’re sentimental, but it is the greatest race on the planet,” he said.

Ashley Newgarden has supported Josef since his early racing days, emphasizing that he remains the same humble person despite his success. “The only thing that man cares about is now Koda and racing,” she expressed. “That has never changed, even with success.”

As the day of the race approaches, Ashley and Koda will be cheering from the stands as Josef goes for his third Indy 500 win. “Daddy’s race car was the fastest,” Koda confidently predicted.
