Josh Brolin Reflects on Missed Opportunity to Play Batman

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Actor Josh Brolin, best known for embodying the superhero Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently revealed that he was once considered for the role of Batman in Zack Snyder‘s DC Extended Universe. This disclosure has captivated fans of superhero films, who are intrigued by the alternate casting possibilities.
In a 2022 appearance on a podcast, Brolin shared insights about his approach to the iconic character. He disclosed that he was approached before Snyder’s project “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and expressed genuine interest in the role. However, Snyder decided to take a different direction with Batman’s portrayal, ultimately casting Ben Affleck.
Brolin stated, “That was his decision — that wasn’t my decision.” He envisioned a grittier version of Batman, remarking, “It would have been older, the more raspy, for lack of a better word.” He added with humor, “Honestly, that would have been a fun deal. And maybe I’ll do it when I’m 80.”
The thrill of taking on such a high-stakes character drew Brolin to the role, as he explained, “Something that is set up to not work at all, or to work flyingly — I like those odds. I’m like, ‘Am I the guy who’s gonna make it all fail?’” Yet, despite his enthusiasm, he conveyed no regrets about missing out on the part. In a separate interview, he indicated, “We indirectly talked about it, but we never got to the point because I wasn’t the guy for him. I’m really glad it didn’t happen. I haven’t thought twice about it.”
Brolin’s imposing presence and compelling intensity make him a respected figure among fans who wished to see him in the Batman role. While the DCEU films featuring Affleck’s Batman faced mixed reviews, many fans appreciate Snyder’s darker approach to the comic book genre. The director’s vision garnered a cult following, and Brolin’s potential portrayal of Batman was viewed as a fascinating alternative that never materialized.
Brolin’s career spans nearly four decades, including significant roles in franchises like “Dune” and “Men in Black,” as well as acclaimed films such as “Sicario,” “No Country for Old Men,” and “Everest.” In addition to Thanos, he appeared as the mutant Cable in “Deadpool 2,” collaborating once again with the superhero genre while solidifying his status as a cinematic icon.
While his Batman narrative may have ended there, Brolin has undeniably left an indelible mark within the superhero landscape, particularly through his performance as Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” Both films are currently available to stream on Disney+. As discussions about who could be the next Caped Crusader continue, Brolin’s alternate casting remains a poignant “what if” in the annals of comic book film history.
