Kalif Raymond’s Role Set to Increase for Detroit Lions Amid Jameson Williams’ Suspension
Kalif Raymond, the speedy wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, is poised to see an increase in his role on the team due to the suspension of fellow wideout Jameson Williams. Williams has been officially suspended for two games by the NFL for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, and he will not appeal the decision.
With Williams set to miss games against the Tennessee Titans in Week 8 and the Green Bay Packers in Week 9, Raymond is likely to benefit from the increased snaps. Despite playing fewer than 40 percent of the snaps in the past two weeks, Raymond has made significant contributions, including seven catches for 112 yards and a touchdown on 10 targets.
Raymond, known for his speed with a 4.34-second 40-yard dash time from his college days, is expected to fill the void left by Williams, particularly in downfield routes and gadget plays. However, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson may adjust the play calls to accommodate Williams’ absence.
In addition to Raymond, other players such as Tim Patrick, Allen Robinson, and tight end Sam LaPorta could also see more involvement in the passing game. Amon-Ra St. Brown will continue to be the Lions’ primary wide receiver, but the distribution of targets is likely to shift with Williams out of the lineup.
Raymond’s recent performance, including a touchdown in the Lions’ 31-29 win over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 7, highlights his potential to make an impact even with limited playing time. His ability to contribute in special teams, as seen in his recent 64-yard punt return against his former team, the Tennessee Titans, further underscores his value to the team.
