Kane Williamson Achieves 19,000 International Runs in Champions Trophy Semifinal

LAHORE, Pakistan – New Zealand cricketer Kane Williamson made history on March 5, 2025, becoming the first player from his country to reach 19,000 runs in international cricket during the ICC Champions Trophy semifinals against South Africa. He achieved this milestone in the 20th over of his innings, securing a single off bowler Marco Jansen.
Williamson completed the feat in 440 innings, making him the fourth-fastest batter globally to achieve this significant benchmark. Indian star Virat Kohli holds the record for the fastest, reaching the 19,000-run mark in just 399 innings, followed by cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar (432 innings) and Brian Lara (433 innings).
In his current performance, Williamson displayed exceptional form, scoring his 48th half-century off 62 balls and forming a century partnership with Rachin Ravindra for the second wicket. This season, he has accumulated 341 runs in seven innings, boasting an impressive average of 68.20, with one century and two fifties.
Following his achievement, Williamson expressed gratitude for his journey in cricket, stating, “Every run has felt significant to me, and I’m thankful to my teammates and support system that helped me reach this point.”
Not only is Williamson celebrated for his individual milestones, but he also made his mark as New Zealand’s highest run-scorer in the Champions Trophy, surpassing Stephen Fleming‘s previous record of 441 runs.
With 9,276 runs in Tests, 7,100 runs in ODIs, and 2,575 runs in T20Is, Williamson has solidified his status as one of the world’s top technical batsmen. He averages 54.88 in Tests, and his performance has drawn comparisons to cricket’s ‘Fab Four,’ including Virat Kohli, Joe Root, and Steve Smith.
Williamson’s achievement granted him 16th place among the elite group of players worldwide who have scored 19,000 runs or more in international formats. This milestone further distinguishes him, as he is also only the third New Zealand player to surpass 15,000 runs, joining Ross Taylor and Stephen Fleming in this exclusive club.
As the semifinals continue, Williamson’s focus remains on leading his team to victory, stating, “I am fully committed to contributing to the team’s success in every match we play.”
