Kansas City Royals Sign Bobby Witt Jr. To Historic $288.8 Million Contract Extension

Kansas City Royals have made history by signing their young star, Bobby Witt Jr., to an 11-year, $288.8 million contract extension, according to sources. The massive deal includes flexibility for Witt, as he will have the option to opt out after the seventh year and subsequent years until the 10th. The contract also includes a club option for the 11th season, which could extend the deal to a total of 14 years and $377 million. This monumental agreement comes amidst the Royals’ efforts to build a competitive team around Witt and their plans for a new stadium in downtown Kansas City.

Witt, a 23-year-old shortstop, had a stellar performance last season, solidifying his status as one of the best players in baseball. He finished the season with an impressive .276/.319/.495 batting line, hitting 30 home runs, stealing 49 bases, and showcasing Gold Glove-caliber defense. The Royals’ urgency in securing Witt’s long-term commitment can be attributed to his immense talent and potential.

The Royals’ owner, John Sherman, has been actively working towards bringing the team back to relevance since he acquired the franchise in 2019. Locking up Witt was the team’s top priority this offseason, coinciding with their efforts to fund a new downtown stadium. The current stadium, Kauffman Stadium, was built in 1973 and renovations are deemed necessary to modernize the Royals’ home. A ballot referendum in Jackson County, Missouri, will determine whether a three-eighths-of-a-cent tax will be extended to help fund the new stadium and renovate the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium.

Bobby Witt Jr., whose father enjoyed a successful 16-year career as a major league pitcher, has been highly regarded by scouts since his high school days in Colleyville, Texas. The Royals selected him as the No. 2 pick in the 2019 draft, just months before John Sherman became the team’s owner. Witt made his major league debut in 2022 and immediately impressed with his power, speed, and defensive skills.

In his rookie season, Witt hit 20 home runs, stole 30 bases, and displayed exceptional speed on the bases. However, he elevated his game even further in 2023 after participating in the World Baseball Classic, leading the majors with 11 triples. Witt’s improved plate discipline resulted in a reduced strikeout rate and enhanced power, making him one of the most exciting young talents in the league alongside stars like Fernando Tatis Jr., Mike Trout, Francisco Lindor, Ronald Acuña Jr., and Mookie Betts.

By signing Witt to this historic contract extension, the Kansas City Royals are investing in trust and building a team around him. Despite the team’s struggles in the past two seasons, Witt’s commitment shows a belief in the organization’s future. The addition of pitchers Salvador Perez, Brad Keller, Mike Minor, and Kris Bubic, as well as the return of Whit Merrifield, will provide Witt with better support in the lineup and on the field.

The deal signifies the Royals’ determination to secure their young star and propel the team towards success. Witt’s remarkable performance and potential have positioned him as one of the top players in the game, with multiple teams projecting MVP-type seasons in his future. This long-term contract extension not only solidifies the Royals’ commitment to Witt but also serves as a significant milestone in the team’s journey to bring relevance and excitement back to Kansas City baseball.
