Kawhi Leonard Ready to Compete Again as Playoffs Approach

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — As the LA Clippers gear up for their first-round playoff series against the Denver Nuggets, forward Kawhi Leonard expresses unwavering enthusiasm despite recent injury setbacks. At 33, Leonard has missed substantial time this season due to a right knee injury but remains optimistic about competing at a high level.
“I love the game. I love the game, and I have a passion for it still,” Leonard said after practice on Wednesday. “Everything has its ups and downs. You got to go through those in life and just keep going.”
Leonard’s determination is evident, even as he navigates another challenging season. He has played in only 37 games, missing the first 34 due to his knee issues. However, his impact has been significant in recent weeks, averaging 30.5 points per game as the Clippers secured critical late-season wins.
“What you see from Kawhi is just pure dedication to the game,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said. “He’s a hard worker, and he’s put in the effort with the medical staff to come back strong. I’m happy to see him back on the floor.”
In his last two games, Leonard showcased his skills by leading the team to victories against Sacramento and Golden State, averaging over 30 points in those pivotal moments. Leonard’s presence on the court has been a vital factor in guiding the Clippers to the playoffs, where they secured the fifth seed with a 50-32 record.
Teammate Norman Powell, who was on the Raptors team that won the championship with Leonard in 2019, noted the forward’s mental toughness. “He understands things that aren’t under his control and just focuses on what he can control,” Powell said. “That’s the best attribute about him.”
Leonard’s journey in Los Angeles has been marred by injuries. After joining the Clippers in 2019, he has faced multiple setbacks, including missing the entire 2021-22 season and significant portions of the last two seasons. Despite these challenges, he remains unfazed and is focused on making a playoff impact.
Leonard averaged 21.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 3.1 assists this season while shooting nearly 50% from the field. As the playoffs approach, he reflects on the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.
“I just want to play my best and have fun,” he said. “This opportunity doesn’t come around every day, so I’m grateful to be back.”
The Clippers will need Leonard’s contributions as they face the Nuggets, a team that presents a formidable challenge led by three-time MVP Nikola Jokic. Game 1 is scheduled for Saturday, April 20, 2025, at 3:30 p.m. ET at Ball Arena in Denver.
