LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky Wildcats are set to host Kansas transfer guard Nimari Griffen for an official visit next Tuesday, as the team seeks to bolster its roster for the upcoming season. Griffen, a 6-foot-6 rising senior from Dallas, Texas, averaged 6.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game this past season with the Jayhawks.

Griffen’s visit comes at a crucial time, with the spring transfer portal opening earlier this week. His performance at Kansas, where he started 20 games, saw a dip in statistics compared to his earlier tenure at Alabama, where he averaged a career-high 11.2 points as a sophomore. Despite challenges at Kansas under coach Bill Self, Griffen’s talent remains evident.

“It just wasn’t a fit for me in Lawrence,” Griffen said in a recent interview. “I’m looking for a system that complements my style of play. I think Kentucky could be that place.”

During his time with the Crimson Tide, Griffen gained recognition as a four-star recruit, notable for his standout performances during the NCAA tournament, including scoring 19 points against North Carolina in the Sweet 16. His keen sharpshooting skills were also on display in a memorable game against Kentucky, where he scored 21 points in a high-scoring matchup.

“Nimari has the ability to impact any game he steps into,” said a high school coach. “He thrives in up-tempo offenses that allow him to use his shooting and athleticism.”

Griffen has had a total of 106 appearances in college basketball, showcasing his versatility and adaptability. As Kentucky looks to finalize its roster, Griffen is considered one of the top available guards in the transfer portal, with potential fits across various programs.

Coach John Calipari has been actively seeking new talent after some departures from the team, positioning Kentucky to attract high-caliber players like Griffen. The Wildcats currently hold one of the best transfer classes in the nation, bringing in players from notable programs.

“With the way the game is evolving, having someone like Griffen would significantly enhance our offensive strategy,” Calipari stated. “We’re excited to see what he can bring to our program.”

Griffen’s visit next week will play a pivotal role in his decision-making process, as he weighs his options to either remain in the SEC or explore other offers. His history with Alabama and recent experiences at Kansas have laid the groundwork for an informed choice.

The upcoming transfer portal window may see more action, but for now, all eyes are on Kentucky and their potential new addition in Nimari Griffen.
