PROVO, Utah — Kevin Young has signed a long-term contract extension to remain the head coach of the BYU Cougars men’s basketball team. The announcement came on Thursday evening, following a successful season that included a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

The terms of Young’s extension have not been disclosed. However, it marks a significant commitment from BYU as they look to build on a promising season that saw the Cougars finish 26-10 and third in the Big 12 Conference with a 14-6 record.

Young, who took over the program in April 2024 after Mark Pope moved to Kentucky, expressed his excitement in a statement. “My family and I have loved our first year at BYU, being surrounded by great people, at a great university with shared values,” Young said. “I’m excited to continue to build a program based on trying to help young men prepare for the NBA, win at the highest level, and do it at BYU.”

The extension comes at a crucial time as BYU prepares for the next season, particularly with the signing of A.J. Dybantsa, a top recruit projected to be a potential No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft. Young’s recruiting efforts have also included securing several other promising players, setting BOYU up for future success.

New athletic director Brian Santiago indicated that keeping Young was a top priority. Young’s established reputation and success with the Cougars have made him a valuable asset for the program’s growth. Santiago stated, “This is an exciting time for all of BYU Athletics with Brian Santiago recently being named athletic director.”

As the Cougars look ahead, they are also preparing one of their strongest nonconference schedules in history. Young’s commitment is expected to bring stability and a higher level of competition to BYU basketball as they strive for even greater achievements.
