Jason Kidd Knicks Head Coach Search

NEW YORK, NY — The New York Knicks are actively exploring candidates for their head coaching position after parting ways with Tom Thibodeau earlier this week. Sources indicate the Knicks plan to request permission from the Dallas Mavericks to interview head coach Jason Kidd.

Thibodeau, who led the Knicks to back-to-back 50-win seasons for the first time since the mid-1990s, was let go following the team’s elimination by the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. His .579 winning percentage ranks the highest in league history for coaches who have never reached the NBA Finals, according to ESPN Research.

While the Knicks have not yet formally approached the Mavericks for permission to speak to Kidd, league insiders describe New York’s interest as serious. Kidd, who has two years left on his contract with Dallas, was considered during the last Knicks coaching search in 2020, before Thibodeau was hired.

The potential for a trade is also open, given that New York sacrificed significant draft assets in their prior trades. The Knicks currently hold a top-eight-protected 2026 pick and eight second-round picks for future drafts, along with swap rights in several upcoming drafts.

Kidd, a former Knicks player and Hall of Famer, has a solid record with Dallas, achieving a 54.6% winning percentage during his four seasons with the team. He steered the Mavericks to the NBA Finals last year, but recent roster changes have raised questions about his future.

After the Mavericks traded superstar Luka Doncic, Kidd’s involvement in major team decisions has reportedly come under scrutiny. Sources indicate that he remains content coaching in Dallas and has strong relationships with current Mavericks players.

As the Knicks navigate their coaching search, it remains uncertain if the Mavericks will grant permission for Kidd to pursue the opportunity in New York. This offseason could bring significant changes, not only to the Knicks but also to the Mavericks’ coaching staff.
