LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Los Angeles Lakers announced a long-term contract extension for general manager Rob Pelinka, promoting him to president of basketball operations, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania on April 18, 2025. This decision solidifies the leadership structure of the franchise as it heads into the postseason.

Pelinka, who has served as general manager since 2017, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue his work with the organization. Lakers owner Jeanie Buss noted, “For eight seasons, I have relied on Rob’s vision and leadership to do what’s best for the Lakers organization. I value his partnership and professionalism and believe in his ability to deliver championship-caliber basketball for Los Angeles and Lakers fans everywhere.”

The L.A. Lakers are currently 49-33, securing the No. 3 seed in the playoffs, and will begin their postseason campaign against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Pelinka’s strategies have been crucial, highlighted by his recent acquisition of star guard Luka Dončić, further strengthening the roster.

“This extension reflects our confidence in Rob as we look to build on our recent successes,” Buss added. Pelinka previously led the team to its 2020 championship during a season that saw the duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis thrive.

n

JJ Redick, who was hired as head coach last offseason, also secured a long-term contract, suggesting a stable and unified front at the top of the Lakers organization. Both Pelinka and Redick have implemented a blend of analytical and traditional basketball strategies, enhancing the team’s competitive edge.

n

“Having my coach in place allows me to align our basketball vision,” Pelinka said during the announcement. “I’m excited for what we can achieve together over the next few years.”

n

The Lakers have demonstrated resilience, finishing the season strong with a record of 9-2 to rise from the No. 8 to the No. 6 spot in the Western Conference. They displayed the No. 8 offense, averaging 115.7 points per 100 possessions, and ranked sixth defensively, allowing 110.8 points per 100 possessions.

Fans and analysts alike are optimistic about Pelinka’s continued leadership as the team prepares for playoff competition. The Lakers will utilize home court advantage in their best-of-seven series against the Timberwolves, which begins next week.
